About this artwork
This small-town view takes its title from the top of the Johannisstrasse in Murnau, a street in the Bavarian town of Murnau am Staffelsee. Kandinsky painted it in 1908 in oil on cardboard, a modest support that suits a quick, direct approach to the scene. Kandinsky was born in Moscow and began his painting studies at thirty, and he is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of abstraction in Western art. Seen alongside that reputation, a street scene such as this is a welcome chance to look at how he approached an everyday place. Today the painting belongs to the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum.
On your wall: A good fit for a study, hallway or living room where a modern, painterly street scene can sit comfortably alongside contemporary furnishings and other abstract or landscape pieces.
