Hiroshige's Snow at Benzaiten Shrine is a colour woodblock print in the large oban format, made around 1844/45. The title points to a winter view of a shrine dedicated to Benzaiten, covered in snow. Hiroshige was born in 1797 and died in 1858, and is regarded as the last great master of the ukiyo-e tradition. This print is held in the Art Institute of Chicago. Woodblock printing built up an image from carved blocks, and it suits a subject such as snow, where the paper and the lightest tones matter so much.
On your wall: Its wintry subject suits calm spaces such as a hallway, study or bedroom, where a quiet Japanese scene can bring a sense of stillness.

Utagawa Hiroshige, born Andō Tokutarō and also known as Andō Hiroshige, was a Japanese artist who worked in the ukiyo-e tradition. He is regarded as the last great master of that tradition, and his name remains closely tied to the form. His prints are a fine way to bring that heritage into a home.
