About this artwork

Hiroshige places us by the pine trees, looking in through a doorway as a moon-viewing party draws to a close. Behind a translucent paper door, the silhouette of a figure with an elaborate hairstyle can be made out, and only the hem of their clothing trails into view. In the upper right, another person remains seated on the floor beside a musical instrument and a tray of blue-and-white ceramics, perhaps still enjoying the autumn moon above the ships in Edo Bay, now Tokyo. Made in 1857 as a colour woodblock print, it belongs to the Edo period and to his series One Hundred Views of Famous Places.

On your wall: Its calm, intimate scene suits living rooms, studies and bedrooms, and sits well in quiet spaces where a Japanese-inspired or understated interior is wanted.

About Utagawa Hiroshige

Utagawa Hiroshige, born Andō Tokutarō and also known as Andō Hiroshige, was a Japanese artist who worked in the ukiyo-e tradition. He is regarded as the last great master of that tradition, and his name remains closely tied to the form. His prints are a fine way to bring that heritage into a home.
