About this artwork

Shitaya Hirokoji dates from 1856 and is number 13 in Utagawa Hiroshige's series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo. It opens the series' spring section. The print belongs to the ukiyo-e tradition and to meisho-e, the genre of pictures of celebrated places. Its subject is the Shitaya Hirokoji district, seen as part of the season of spring. Hiroshige is regarded as the last great master of ukiyo-e, and this view shows how he brought a named place in Edo together with the character of a particular time of year.

On your wall: A fitting choice for a study, hallway or living room where a quiet Japanese print and a seasonal view of a city would be welcome.

About Utagawa Hiroshige

Utagawa Hiroshige, born Andō Tokutarō and also known as Andō Hiroshige, was a Japanese artist who worked in the ukiyo-e tradition. He is regarded as the last great master of that tradition, and his name remains closely tied to the form. His prints are a fine way to bring that heritage into a home.
