Wassily Kandinsky, 1911
Kandinsky's Improvisation 18 dates from 1911 and carries a quiet reference in its full title: a gravestone. Colour and form do the rest.

Improvisation 18, with the added title 'with gravestone', was painted by Wassily Kandinsky in 1911 in oil on canvas. It belongs to the Improvisation series, made while Kandinsky was working as one of the pioneers of abstraction in Western art. The parenthetical note in the title hints at a gravestone among the shapes, though the painting itself is built from colour and form rather than from a straightforward scene. Today the work is held at the Lenbachhaus. It is a good one to spend time with, letting your eye move across the canvas and find its own way through.
On your wall: Its abstract character suits living rooms, studies and open-plan spaces where a modern, expressive piece can anchor the wall and invite a second look.

Wassily Kandinsky was a Russian painter and art theorist, born in Moscow. He came to painting relatively late, beginning his studies at thirty. He went on to work in Germany during the late Belle Époque and the interwar years, and is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of abstraction in Western art.
