Painted in 1914, this work is known as Improvisation Klamm, with Klamm meaning a gorge or ravine. It is made in oil paint on canvas and belongs to the collection of the Lenbachhaus. Kandinsky is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of abstraction in Western art, and the title invites you to look for the sense of a narrow, enclosed place within the painting's abstract forms. Born in Moscow, he only began his painting studies at the age of thirty, and this piece comes from a mature stage of his work as an abstract painter.
On your wall: Suited to living rooms, studies and other interiors where a modern, abstract piece can serve as a focal point and bring a sense of movement to the wall.
