About this artwork

This print shows two great tits resting on a branch of green maple. Ohara Koson made it in Japan as a colour woodblock print on paper, with a black outline block and separate blocks of colour. The image measures 34.4 cm high and 18.6 cm wide, a tall, narrow format that suits a single branch with its small visitors. It is dated between 1900 and 1936, and Koson's name appears on the print itself. Koson worked as a painter and print designer and was a leading figure in the shinsaku-hanga and shin-hanga movements. The print entered the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam as a gift in 1999.

On your wall: Its upright shape and natural subject suit a quiet corner, a hallway, a study or a bedroom, especially where a calm, nature-inspired touch is wanted.
