About this artwork

Paul Klee made this watercolour in 1929. The title, Der Ballon im Fenster, points to its central motif: a striped balloon framed between curtain-like shapes, as though glimpsed through a window. Bands of colour run through the picture, and geometric forms sit beneath the balloon. The work is on paper and mounted on a sheet the artist prepared himself, which carries his handwritten inscription and date. Klee also signed the image in the lower right corner. The image is modest in size, around 32 by 24 centimetres, which gives it an intimate, carefully balanced feel.

On your wall: Its colour bands and playful geometry suit a study, living room or hallway, and sit comfortably in modern interiors that welcome a little lightness and imagination.

About Paul Klee

Paul Klee was a Swiss-born German artist whose style was entirely his own. Over his career he drew on several movements, including expressionism, cubism and surrealism, and blended these influences into work that remains unmistakably his. For a Swiss customer, there is something pleasing in seeing a compatriot's imagination so distinctively at play.
