Kandinsky painted this view of Munich's English Garden in 1903. It is a small oil sketch on cardboard, worked in thick paint. A dark lake lies at the centre, with a dinghy on the water and trees in autumn colours around its edge, all beneath a yellow sky. The loaded brushwork gives the scene a lively surface and lets colour carry much of the mood. Kandinsky is widely seen as one of the pioneers of abstraction, and this early landscape shows him working directly from a familiar kind of subject. The work is held at the Musée National d'Art Moderne.
On your wall: The deep lake tones and warm autumn yellows and oranges would suit a living room, study or hallway, especially where you want a note of warmth against calm, neutral walls.

Wassily Kandinsky was a Russian painter and art theorist, born in Moscow. He came to painting relatively late, beginning his studies at thirty. He went on to work in Germany during the late Belle Époque and the interwar years, and is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of abstraction in Western art.
