This plate shows a pink Gallica rose, titled Rosa gallica Aurelianensis. It is linked to the rose known as 'Duchesse d'Orléans' and belongs to Redouté's Les Roses, his well-known series of rose illustrations. Redouté was a painter and botanist, admired for flower studies that combine close observation with a delicate touch. Here the image is a printed page, with its captions and printer's credits set around the rose. The result feels like a leaf from a botanical book, with the flower as its clear focus.
On your wall: Its soft pink and botanical character suit a bedroom, hallway, study or dining room, especially where a calm, traditional or lightly vintage look is wanted.

Pierre-Joseph Redouté was a painter and botanist from the Austrian Netherlands. He is best known for his watercolours of roses, lilies and other flowers, painted at the Château de Malmaison. Many were published as large coloured stipple engravings. Admirers nicknamed him "the Raphael of flowers", and he has often been ranked among the finest botanical illustrators.
