Wassily Kandinsky, 1930
Kandinsky's title points to the two things that drive this abstract work: flat areas and drawn lines, painted in oil in June 1930.

Surfaces and Lines is an abstract painting by Wassily Kandinsky, made in June 1930. It is oil on board and measures 49 by 70 centimetres, a modest, horizontal format. The title names its basic ingredients: areas of paint and linear marks, set against one another rather than describing any scene or object. Kandinsky is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of abstraction in Western art, and this work belongs to that line of enquiry. It invites you to follow shapes and strokes for their own sake and to see how they relate across the board.
On your wall: Its abstract character suits modern interiors such as a living room, study or studio, where it can sit comfortably on a clear wall and give the eye something to explore.
