Hiroshi Yoshida made this print in 1926, and its title points to two things a viewer will find at its centre: a willow tree and a stone bridge. It is a colour woodblock print, a technique Yoshida worked in throughout his career as a landscape printmaker. The print carries his pencil signature and inscription, along with his seal and stamp. It is a small, upright work, roughly 14.5 by 9.75 inches in its original form. Yoshida is counted among the leading artists of the shin-hanga style, and trees, bridges and landscapes sit comfortably within that body of work.
On your wall: Its gentle, tree-and-bridge subject suits calm spaces such as a hallway, study, bedroom or reading corner, where a quiet landscape can be enjoyed up close.

Hiroshi Yoshida was a Japanese painter and woodblock printmaker of the 20th century. He is counted, alongside Hasui Kawase, among the finest artists of the shin-hanga style, and is admired above all for his landscapes. He travelled widely, and became known for presenting subjects such as the Taj Mahal, the Swiss Alps and the Grand Canyon in traditional Japanese woodblock form.
