This is a 1916 abstract painting by Wassily Kandinsky, titled Sketch with Orange Border. As the title suggests, it is a preparatory study, and an orange edge frames the composition. Kandinsky was born in Moscow and worked in Germany. He began his painting studies at thirty and is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of abstraction in Western art. This piece belongs to that body of abstract work, in which form and colour take the place of recognisable subjects.
On your wall: The orange border and abstract character suit a modern living room, a studio or a study, particularly where a warm accent against neutral walls would be welcome.
