Wassily Kandinsky, 1910–11
A snowy village in blue and pink, with red roofs and a church tower, seen through Kandinsky's expressive use of colour.

This winter landscape shows a village under snow, with red-roofed houses gathered around a church tower. The snowfield in the foreground is painted in blues and pinks, so the cold season feels vivid rather than muted. The forms are loosely handled and the colour does much of the work, which gives the scene an expressionist character. Kandinsky's signature appears in capitals at the lower left. The work is now in the Lenbachhaus.
On your wall: The cool blues and warm red accents suit a living room, hallway or study, particularly where a modern interior could use a little colour.

Wassily Kandinsky was a Russian painter and art theorist, born in Moscow. He came to painting relatively late, beginning his studies at thirty. He went on to work in Germany during the late Belle Époque and the interwar years, and is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of abstraction in Western art.
