About this artwork

Painted in 1891 in oil on canvas, this is the first of the jungle scenes for which Henri Rousseau is chiefly known. A tiger, lit by a flash of lightning, prepares to pounce on its prey while a fierce gale rages around it. Trees, flowers and streaks of lightning fill the scene. Rousseau worked in the naïve manner, and the picture is also known as Surprised! The title tells you the drama, and the painting lets you feel the tension of that instant.

On your wall: Its bold jungle drama suits a living room, study or hallway where you want a strong, characterful focal point against simple, modern furnishings.

About Henri Rousseau

Henri Rousseau was a French post-Impressionist painter who worked in the Naïve, or Primitive, manner. He was nicknamed Le Douanier, a playful nod to his job collecting tolls and taxes. He began painting seriously in his early forties and, by the age of 49, had retired from that work to devote himself fully to art.
