Ohara Koson, 1900
Five gulls hold the air above a rough, restless sea in this small Japanese woodblock print by Ohara Koson.

The title tells us what to look for: five sea gulls flying over a stormy sea. Ohara Koson made the print in Tokyo as a colour woodblock on paper. A black outline block gives the drawing its structure, and separate blocks add the colour. The sheet is small, about 25 by 17.5 centimetres. It dates from between 1900 and 1930. Koson worked at the forefront of the shinsaku-hanga and shin-hanga movements in Japanese printmaking, and the clean lines of this print belong to that tradition. The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam holds this impression, which came to the collection as a gift in 2005.
On your wall: Its birds and sea suit a calm study, hallway or bedroom, and sit well in quiet, minimal rooms or alongside other Japanese-inspired pieces.
