About this artwork

This colour woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige shows Mannen Bridge in Fukagawa, also known in Japanese as Fukagawa Mannenbashi. It dates from the eleventh month of 1857 and is number 56 in the series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo. Hiroshige is regarded as the last great master of the ukiyo-e tradition, and this print belongs to that world of woodblock images. The impression is held at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, as a gift of Arthur and Fran Sherwood.

On your wall: It suits calm, considered spaces such as a study, hallway or living room, particularly where Japanese art or a quiet interest in travel and place is welcome.

About Utagawa Hiroshige

Utagawa Hiroshige, born Andō Tokutarō and also known as Andō Hiroshige, was a Japanese artist who worked in the ukiyo-e tradition. He is regarded as the last great master of that tradition, and his name remains closely tied to the form. His prints are a fine way to bring that heritage into a home.
