This colour woodcut by Ohara Koson shows a pheasant walking through snow and leaving a trail of prints behind it. In the background a second bird can be seen, and the whole scene sits beneath a rosy evening sky. The print was made in Japan between 1900 and 1945 and published by Nishinomiya Yosaku. It was produced as a colour woodcut on Japanese paper, with a black line block combined with blocks of colour. The printed image measures 422 by 266 millimetres, a tall, narrow format that suits the quiet winter scene. Koson is associated with the shin-hanga movement of Japanese printmaking.
On your wall: The pale snow and soft pink sky suit calm spaces such as bedrooms, hallways, reading corners or living rooms with a gentle, natural feel.
