Juan Gris painted this still life in 1917, bringing together a dish of fruit, tableware and a checkered tablecloth. It is made in oil on panel. Gris was a Spanish painter born in Madrid who worked mostly in France, and he is closely linked with Cubism. Still life was a natural subject for that movement, and here everyday objects on a table offer a way to explore shape and pattern. The work belongs to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.
On your wall: Its everyday subject and graphic checkered pattern suit dining rooms, kitchens, studies and modern living spaces that welcome a little structure and character.
