This is a still life of flowers, made in France in 1933 and painted in gouache, a water-based medium known for its opaque, matt colour. Albert Gleizes is best known as a French painter and theorist who helped shape Cubism. He co-wrote the treatise Du "Cubisme" in 1912 and was a founding member of the Section d'Or. In the 1930s much of his energy went into writing about painting and form. Here he turns to a traditional subject, flowers, a theme that painters have returned to for centuries.
On your wall: A floral subject that sits well in a living room, dining area or study, especially where you want a modern, abstract character with a touch of the traditional.
