This plate comes from the Hortus Eystettensis of 1613, in the edition known as the Fürstenausgabe. It is a hand-coloured engraving. The main subject is a double red peony, shown with a bud and its root, labelled Paeonia polyanthos flore rubro. Beside it is a smaller plant, a houseleek with pink flowers, labelled Sedum minus flore rubente. The engraving is linked to Wolfgang Kilian. Besler, a Nuremberg apothecary and botanist, is best known for this large florilegium. The plate is taken from a copy held in the Eichstätt seminary library.
On your wall: The rich red of the peony and soft pink accents suit a study, dining room, hallway or quiet bedroom, especially where a botanical or traditional look is wanted.
