This plate from Basilius Besler's Hortus Eystettensis of 1613 presents five varieties of garden hollyhock, labelled Malva hortensis. Three single-flowered stems carry white, pink and red blooms, while two taller stems bear double flowers. The plate is an engraving with hand colouring, and each plant is set out clearly so its flowers, leaves and habit can be studied. This example comes from the so-called Fürstenausgabe, the coloured edition of the book. Besler was a Nuremberg apothecary and botanist, and the Hortus Eystettensis is his best-known work.
On your wall: The soft whites, pinks and reds suit a calm sitting room, hallway or dining room, and sit well in a kitchen or study where botanical subjects are welcome.
