This plate comes from the Hortus Eystettensis of 1613, the work for which Basilius Besler is best known. It is an engraving, coloured by hand, and it shows five tulips arranged together on the page. Each is labelled in Latin, and the bulbs and roots are drawn beneath the flowers, so you can study the whole plant from the ground up. The plate appears in the 'Fürstenausgabe', the special edition of the book, in a copy held in the Eichstätt seminary library. Besler was a Nuremberg apothecary and botanist, and the care of his botanical drawing is clear here.
On your wall: Its clear botanical layout and floral subject suit studies, hallways, dining rooms and calm living spaces, especially where a considered, traditional look is wanted.
