Ferdinand Hodler painted this landscape in 1902 in oil on canvas. The title places us in the Kiental, a valley in the Swiss Alps, with the Blümlisalp massif as its subject. Hodler is among the best-known Swiss painters of the nineteenth century. He began with realistic portraits, landscapes and genre scenes, and later developed a personal Symbolist approach he called "parallelism". The painting is held in the collection of the St. Gallen Museum of Art.
On your wall: Its alpine subject suits living rooms, studies and hallways, especially where a quiet, nature-inspired view is welcome.

Ferdinand Hodler was a Swiss painter, counted among the best-known Swiss artists of the nineteenth century. He began with realistic portraits, landscapes and scenes of everyday life. Later he moved towards a personal form of Symbolism, which he called "parallelism". His work shows a clear shift from close observation to a more distinctive, individual style.
