This plate shows the Koklass Pheasant, known to ornithologists as Pucrasia macrolopha. John Gould made it in 1850, and it belongs to his series The Birds of Asia, where it appears in the seventh volume. Gould was an English ornithologist who published large monographs on birds, with plates drawn by his wife Elizabeth and by several other artists. His work on birds in Australia earned him a reputation there as the father of bird study, and his study of the birds now nicknamed Darwin's finches played a part in the thinking behind Darwin's theory of evolution.
On your wall: Its subject suits a study, hallway or sitting room where natural history illustrations are welcome, and it sits well beside other botanical or bird prints.

John Gould was an English ornithologist who published monographs on birds, with plates by his wife, Elizabeth Gould, and artists including Edward Lear, Joseph Wolf and William Matthew Hart. His seven-volume Birds of Australia, from the 1840s, led many to regard him as the father of Australian bird study. He also identified the birds now called Darwin's finches.
