This plate from 1841 shows a white-throated caracara, Phalcoboenus albogularis, perched on a grassy mound. Its dark back contrasts with the pale throat, and pale mountains stand in the distance. The image is a hand-coloured lithograph, labelled Birds Pl. 1 and captioned with an older name for the species, Milvago albogularis. It belongs to The Zoology of the Voyage of H.M.S. Beagle, in the part devoted to birds, published between 1838 and 1841 with John Gould's name attached to it.
On your wall: Its muted earthy tones and calm natural subject suit a study, hallway or living room, particularly where other nature prints hang.

John Gould was an English ornithologist who published monographs on birds, with plates by his wife, Elizabeth Gould, and artists including Edward Lear, Joseph Wolf and William Matthew Hart. His seven-volume Birds of Australia, from the 1840s, led many to regard him as the father of Australian bird study. He also identified the birds now called Darwin's finches.
