This is a plate of Camarhynchus crassirostris, a finch now placed in the genus Platyspiza, by the English ornithologist John Gould. It belongs to The Zoology of the Voyage of H.M.S. Beagle, the part devoted to birds, published between 1838 and 1841. Gould is remembered for identifying the birds now nicknamed Darwin's finches, work that played a part in the beginnings of Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection. His bird books were illustrated by plates made by his wife, Elizabeth Gould, and by several other artists.

John Gould was an English ornithologist who published monographs on birds, with plates by his wife, Elizabeth Gould, and artists including Edward Lear, Joseph Wolf and William Matthew Hart. His seven-volume Birds of Australia, from the 1840s, led many to regard him as the father of Australian bird study. He also identified the birds now called Darwin's finches.
