About this artwork

This is an oil painting on canvas made by Claude Monet in 1886. The title points to the Pyramides at Port-Coton and to an effect of sunlight, so the subject is a place seen under a particular quality of light. That interest in how light changes what we see is central to Impressionism, the movement Monet helped to found and which grew from his wish to paint nature as he perceived it. Here the title invites you to look at how sunlight shapes the scene.

On your wall: Its focus on sunlight and landscape suits living rooms, studies and quiet hallways where a calm, light-filled view can sit comfortably.

About Claude Monet

Claude Monet was a French painter and a founder of Impressionism. He devoted his long career to expressing nature as he perceived it, working especially in outdoor landscape painting. The movement takes its name from his painting Impression, Sunrise, shown in 1874 at the First Impressionist Exhibition, which he helped initiate as an alternative to the Salon.
