Paul Signac, 1931
Paul Signac's 1931 view of the harbour at Barfleur, in Normandy, painted in the dotted brushwork he helped to develop.

Signac painted this harbour scene of Barfleur, a port in Normandy, in 1931. It belongs to his marine paintings and is worked in Pointillism, the technique built from small, separate touches of colour, which he developed alongside Georges Seurat. The French national flag appears within the scene, a small detail to look for as your eye moves across the water and the harbour.
On your wall: With its harbour subject and the lively, broken colour of Pointillism, it suits a living room, hallway or study where a fresh, coastal note is welcome.

Paul Signac was a French painter associated with Neo-Impressionism. Working alongside Georges Seurat, he helped develop Pointillism, a technique in which a picture is built from small, separate touches of colour. His name is closely linked with that approach, and it remains the reason his work is so often discussed today.
