About this artwork

Ohara Koson's print shows a hosta in flower: small purple blooms rise above large, generous green leaves. It is a colour woodblock print on paper, made in Japan between 1920 and 1930. The design has a black outline block with separate colour blocks added to it. Koson designed the image, while Maeda cut the blocks and Komatsu Wasakichi printed it. It was published in Tokyo by Kawaguchi. The image measures about 32.5 by 22 centimetres in its original form. Koson is known as a leading figure in the shin-hanga and shinsaku-hanga movements of the early twentieth century.

On your wall: The soft greens and touches of purple suit calm spaces such as a study, hallway, bedroom or sitting room, especially where a quiet botanical note is welcome.
