This 1925 woodblock print shows the Grand Canyon and belongs to Hiroshi Yoshida's United States series. Yoshida was a painter and printmaker of the twentieth century, and he is counted, alongside Hasui Kawase, among the leading artists of the shin-hanga style. He travelled widely to see different landscapes and to learn from other artistic traditions. He became known for depicting places outside Japan, such as the Swiss Alps, the Taj Mahal and America's National Parks, using the traditional Japanese woodblock method. Here that approach is applied to one of the best-known landscapes in the American West.
On your wall: It suits living rooms, studies and hallways where a calm landscape can bring a sense of space and distance, particularly in homes that enjoy travel and Japanese prints.
