Hodler painted this view of olive trees in Spain in 1878, when he was at the start of his career. Trees are the heart of the picture, and the title tells us exactly where he found his subject. It belongs to the landscape work of his early period, when he painted in a realistic manner, long before he developed the personal Symbolism of his later years. It is a good example of how he approached the natural world in his youth: with direct observation and a focus on the trees themselves.
On your wall: Its landscape subject and natural theme suit a living room, study or hallway, especially where you want a calm, tree-filled view of the outdoors.

Ferdinand Hodler was a Swiss painter, counted among the best-known Swiss artists of the nineteenth century. He began with realistic portraits, landscapes and scenes of everyday life. Later he moved towards a personal form of Symbolism, which he called "parallelism". His work shows a clear shift from close observation to a more distinctive, individual style.
