Painted in 1908, this work is titled In a Tropical Forest. Struggle between Tiger and Bull. As the title says, it shows a tiger and a bull locked in a struggle, set in a forest. Henri Rousseau made it in oil paint on canvas, and it belongs to the genre of animal art. Rousseau, known as Le Douanier, was a French painter working in the Naïve or Primitive manner. He began painting seriously in his early forties and left his post as a toll and tax collector to paint full-time. The painting is held in the Hermitage Museum.
On your wall: Its jungle setting and dramatic animal subject suit a living room, study or hallway where you want a strong, characterful focal point on the wall.

Henri Rousseau was a French post-Impressionist painter who worked in the Naïve, or Primitive, manner. He was nicknamed Le Douanier, a playful nod to his job collecting tolls and taxes. He began painting seriously in his early forties and, by the age of 49, had retired from that work to devote himself fully to art.
