Hiroshi Yoshida made this woodblock print in 1928. The title points to fast, broken water in the upper reaches of the Tone River, a subject well suited to the landscape work for which he is best known. Yoshida was a painter and printmaker of the twentieth century, and he is regarded, alongside Hasui Kawase, as one of the great artists of the shin-hanga style. He travelled widely during his career, yet he kept to traditional Japanese woodblock methods throughout.
On your wall: With its river landscape and natural subject, it would suit a calm living room, a study or a hallway where a quiet view of moving water is welcome.
