Hiroshi Yoshida, 1933
A quiet view across a pond to a pagoda, framed by the trailing branches of a weeping willow in the foreground.

Hiroshi Yoshida made this colour woodblock print in Japan in 1933. It looks across the Sarusawa pond to a park with a pagoda, while the branches of a weeping willow hang in the foreground. The print was made with a black outline block and separate blocks of colour, printed on paper, and it carries the artist's own signature. Yoshida is known especially for his landscape prints in the shin-hanga style, and this calm scene of water, trees and architecture suits that tradition well.
On your wall: Its calm view of water, willow and pagoda suits a quiet study, a calm bedroom, or a living room with a restrained, natural feel.

Hiroshi Yoshida was a Japanese painter and woodblock printmaker of the 20th century. He is counted, alongside Hasui Kawase, among the finest artists of the shin-hanga style, and is admired above all for his landscapes. He travelled widely, and became known for presenting subjects such as the Taj Mahal, the Swiss Alps and the Grand Canyon in traditional Japanese woodblock form.
