About this artwork

Aivazovsky painted this scene in 1842, in oil on canvas, measuring 58 by 85 centimetres. It is set on the shore of the Bay of Naples. A woman holding up a child and a boy stand on the beach to greet a fishing boat as it comes in through the surf. Behind them, sailing ships lie out on the water, and Vesuvius appears in the distance. The painting is now in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.

On your wall: Its coastal subject and bay view suit a living room, hallway or study, particularly where you want a calm sense of the sea.
