Pissarro painted this winter landscape in 1877. It shows a cluster of white houses with red roofs, set among the bare branches of orchard trees and backed by a rising hillside. The title places the view on the Côte Saint-Denis at Pontoise. It is an oil painting on canvas, worked in an Impressionist manner, and the artist signed it in the lower right. The red of the rooftops stands out against the muted tones of the season, giving the village scene a calm, lived-in feel. The work is now in the Musée d'Orsay.
On your wall: The warm red roofs against soft winter tones suit living rooms, studies and hallways, especially where a calm landscape is wanted alongside natural wood or neutral walls.

Camille Pissarro was a Danish-French painter, born on the island of Saint Thomas, who contributed to both Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. He learned from earlier masters such as Gustave Courbet and Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot. At 54 he took up the Neo-Impressionist style, studying and working alongside Georges Seurat and Paul Signac.
