"Variation" was painted in 1916 by Alexej von Jawlensky, a Russian expressionist painter who worked in Germany. It belongs to a group of paintings by him that share the title Variation. Jawlensky was an important member of the New Munich Artist's Association and of Der Blaue Reiter, and later of Die Blaue Vier. Seen alongside the other works in that group, this painting shows an artist returning to a theme and approaching it again with a fresh eye.
On your wall: A work in a modern, expressive spirit that would suit a living room, study or hallway where you want a thoughtful focal point.
