Paul Signac's 1889 view of Cassis, where mountains curve around the village and the colours seem to hum together.

Signac painted this view of the village of Cassis in oil on canvas in 1889. He was clearly taken with the landscape there, and went on to make five paintings in Cassis. He wrote about this one to Vincent van Gogh, describing white, blue and orange spread harmoniously in gentle undulations, with mountains all around and their curves moving in rhythm. The painting now belongs to the Kunstmuseum Den Haag. It is a landscape in which the shapes of the land and the balance of colour matter as much as the place itself.
On your wall: Its blues, whites and warm oranges suit a calm living room, a bright hallway or a study where a landscape can bring some light.

Paul Signac was a French painter associated with Neo-Impressionism. Working alongside Georges Seurat, he helped develop Pointillism, a technique in which a picture is built from small, separate touches of colour. His name is closely linked with that approach, and it remains the reason his work is so often discussed today.
