Two Chinese egrets stand sleeping among the reeds in a marsh, as the evening settles around them. Ohara Koson painted this scene with a brush, using ink and colour on silk, and signed it with his name at the lower left, alongside his seal. It is a hanging scroll, mounted in silk, and the painted area is tall and narrow, about 126 cm high and 60 cm wide. The scroll is kept in a wooden box marked with Japanese characters. It was given to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam in 2000 by J. Perrée of Eindhoven.
On your wall: Its calm subject and tall, narrow format suit a quiet hallway, a bedroom or a reading corner where a peaceful note is welcome.
