About this artwork

Eugène Atget photographed this ornate wrought-iron shop sign in 1901. Two oval medallions sit within the metalwork: one shows a bunch of grapes, the other a sailing ship. The sepia tone gives the delicate scrollwork a soft, aged warmth, and the photograph invites you to look closely at the craft of the ironwork. Atget was a pioneer of documentary photography who set out to record the architecture and street scenes of Paris before modernisation swept them away, and this study of a single sign reflects that attention to everyday details.

On your wall: Its warm monochrome tones and fine ironwork detail suit a study, hallway, dining room or living space with a classic or quietly traditional feel.

About Eugène Atget

Eugène Atget was a French photographer and self-styled flâneur who set out to record the architecture and street scenes of Paris before modernisation swept them away. He sold his pictures to artists and craftspeople, and later inspired the surrealists. Berenice Abbott first published most of his photographs after his death, when his reputation began to grow.
