Made in France in 1905, this albumen print shows the Grand Trianon at Versailles, as its title tells us. It comes from the hand of Eugène Atget (1857–1927), a French photographer who set out to record the architecture and street scenes of Paris before modernisation swept them away. He sold his work to artists and craftspeople, and later became an inspiration for the surrealists. Wider recognition came only after his death, when Berenice Abbott first published most of his photographs. This print is now in the Art Institute of Chicago.
On your wall: Its measured, historic subject suits studies, libraries, hallways and calm living rooms, especially where traditional or understated decor makes space for photography.
