Painted in 1885, this oil on canvas by Vincent van Gogh shows a woman cooking at a fireplace. The scene centres on the fire and the food being prepared, with pancakes among the things depicted. It is a genre work, drawn from everyday domestic life rather than from grand subjects. Van Gogh is known for expressive, impulsive brushwork, and here that energy meets a quiet, ordinary moment at the hearth. The painting is held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
On your wall: Its everyday hearth scene suits kitchens, dining rooms and cosy reading corners, where a warm domestic subject feels at home.
