This poster advertises Birra Metzger, a beer from Turin, and was published in 1912. Leonetto Cappiello designed it, and it was printed in Paris by Vercasson as a colour lithograph. It is a large sheet, measuring 141 by 102 centimetres. Cappiello, who worked mainly in Paris, is often called the father of modern advertising, partly for his bold figures set against dark backgrounds. The poster belongs to the early twentieth-century tradition of drink advertising, when lithography allowed striking colour to reach the street.
On your wall: It suits a kitchen, dining room, home bar or café-style corner where a vintage advertising poster can add a touch of period character.

Leonetto Cappiello was an Italian and French poster designer and painter who lived and worked mainly in Paris. He is often called the father of modern advertising. While earlier poster artists favoured a painterly look, he took the opposite path, setting bold figures against black backgrounds, a startling contrast to the posters that came before.
