About this artwork
This is a gouache design made by Leonetto Cappiello in 1921, measuring 70 by 52 centimetres. It shows a red-haired woman in a red-and-white striped skirt holding a bottle aloft, with oranges and foliage around her and a deep blue background behind. The work is signed by Cappiello and belongs to his drinks advertising. It is a design for a poster rather than a finished printed one. Cappiello is often called the father of modern advertising, and he became known for bold figures standing out strongly from their backgrounds. Here the warm reds and oranges stand out vividly against the blue.
On your wall: Its deep blue, red and orange suit a kitchen, dining room or bar corner, and would bring colour to a hallway or a study.

About Leonetto Cappiello
Leonetto Cappiello was an Italian and French poster designer and painter who lived and worked mainly in Paris. He is often called the father of modern advertising. While earlier poster artists favoured a painterly look, he took the opposite path, setting bold figures against black backgrounds, a startling contrast to the posters that came before.
