About this artwork

This painting shows a field around Oele, a hamlet in the eastern Netherlands where Mondrian spent the summer of 1907. Young trees stand in the foreground, silhouetted against a twilight sky, and the mood is quiet and evocative. It is made in oil on paper laid on board. The atmosphere of the scene hints at the interest in spirituality that Mondrian pursued through reading in metaphysics and philosophy. That search eventually led him to remove all representational elements and work in pure geometric abstraction, which he began doing in 1916.

On your wall: Its dusky, atmospheric landscape suits a calm living room, bedroom or study, especially where you want a quiet counterpoint to more modern, abstract pieces.
