A quiet still life from 1866, in which Monet turns his attention to a jar of peaches.

Painted in 1866, this still life centres on peaches, as the title tells us, set in a jar. Monet worked in oil on canvas, and the picture is a reminder that his career began well before the landscapes most people associate with him. Today it hangs in the Galerie Neue Meister, part of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden. It is a modest, intimate subject, and rewards a slow look at how simple fruit and glass are brought together on the canvas.
On your wall: Its small-scale domestic subject suits a dining room, kitchen or reading corner, where a still life of fruit feels at home.

Claude Monet was a French painter and a founder of Impressionism. He devoted his long career to expressing nature as he perceived it, working especially in outdoor landscape painting. The movement takes its name from his painting Impression, Sunrise, shown in 1874 at the First Impressionist Exhibition, which he helped initiate as an alternative to the Salon.
