About this artwork

This print shows a swamp hen, a water bird, beside blooming lotus, as the title tells us. It was designed by Ohara Koson, whose name appears on the print itself. The image is a colour woodblock print made in Tokyo, with black outlines printed from a line block and areas of colour added from separate blocks, on Japanese paper. The anonymous printmaker who cut and printed it is not named. It is dated between 1900 and 1930. The sheet is a slim upright format, about 25.5 by 13.4 centimetres, which suits a single bird and its watery setting. Koson worked at the forefront of the shinsaku-hanga and shin-hanga movements.

On your wall: Its tall, narrow format and nature subject suit a hallway, a study or a bedroom, and it would sit well in a calm, minimal interior.
