Monet painted this view of Étretat in 1883, with a rough sea breaking against the cliffs and the great arch of the Porte d'Aval. On the beach, fishing boats and capstan huts are drawn up above the waves, and two figures stand in the foreground. It belongs to Monet's Étretat paintings, a group of around fifty works showing the town's cliffs and sea arches in different weather and at different times of day. Art historians regard them as an important stage in his career, reflecting his growing interest in returning to a single motif. This oil on canvas is in the Museum of Fine Arts of Lyon.
On your wall: Its restless sea and pale cliffs suit a living room, study or hallway, particularly where a coastal subject and a sense of movement would be welcome.

Claude Monet was a French painter and a founder of Impressionism. He devoted his long career to expressing nature as he perceived it, working especially in outdoor landscape painting. The movement takes its name from his painting Impression, Sunrise, shown in 1874 at the First Impressionist Exhibition, which he helped initiate as an alternative to the Salon.
