About this artwork

Painted in 1874, this oil on canvas looks across the Seine at Argenteuil. A moored sailboat and a smaller sailing boat sit on the water beside a stone road bridge, while trees and houses fill the far bank. The painting is done in the Impressionist manner, and it carries Claude Monet's signature. Monet was a key figure in Impressionism, and 1874 was also the year of the first Impressionist exhibition. The subject is a simple, everyday stretch of river, with the bridge and the boats sharing the scene.

On your wall: Its river view and the soft greens of the trees suit living rooms, studies and hallways, especially where a calm, landscape-minded feel is wanted.

About Claude Monet

Claude Monet was a French painter and a founder of Impressionism. He devoted his long career to expressing nature as he perceived it, working especially in outdoor landscape painting. The movement takes its name from his painting Impression, Sunrise, shown in 1874 at the First Impressionist Exhibition, which he helped initiate as an alternative to the Salon.
